Oil Painting Techniques: An Introduction

It is an incredibly versatile and beautiful medium related site. Oil paints can be applied thickly in a buttery manner, and then diluted to a more watery consistency. The versatility of paint allows you to use a wide variety of techniques. I prefer to begin my oil paintings with a sketch using acrylic paint or water-soluble oils. It is common to use turpentine before applying the first layers of paint to thin out oil paint. Turpentine has a toxic smell and I dislike using it. We find acrylic and oil-soluble paints to be more enjoyable when thinned with water.

Drawing out your composition can be a great way to begin oil painting. Many drawing media are compatible with oil paints. Three of my favorite drawing materials are vine charcoals, water-solubles pencils and the combination of both. I like vine charcoal better than other types of charcoal because it’s less likely to smudge, and is also easier to erase. These colored pencils work just like regular pencils. A dampened brush can be used to spread the pencils. Alla Prima may be the technique for you if patience is not your strong suit. Alla prima is painting the entire piece in one session, rather than letting it dry. Oil painting is a fun way to express yourself. Although I prefer the method of painting THE painting with layers, my husband and i also enjoy this spontaneous AND fun way.

Painters who take the time to paint with care will find that glazes are an excellent option. The use of glazings has decreased in recent times, partly because of the time needed to finish this type of painting and its difficulty. Your results this year, however, are not comparable to any other painting techniques. The compositions begin with an opaque monochrome painted often in shades grey. After the first underpainting, thin oil-based glaze layers are added. The colors aren’t mixed immediately. They are layered.

You could also use a set knives or paint brushes, if you want to be adventurous. Knives have the ability to produce very unique effects. It is not possible to achieve this with brushes. Oil paint can both be applied thickly, and removed easily. What we love most about knives is that they are prone to miss small details. It is required that I paint with a relaxed style. This gives a painting an impressionist look. Get a variety of painting knives and try to finish a complete painting using only the knife. At first it may be hard to decide if your painting requires brushes or knives, but this exercise is fun.

You might want to add more texture or body to your painting. You can use thick strokes of paint and the impasto style to give your painting more body. This will show all of the wonderful brushstrokes. You can view Van Gogh’s work and watch the program in action. Oil painting has been a popular medium for artists. There’s a lot to distinguish in oil paintings. You will never get bored of all the tools, techniques and media.
